Aims to bring 100 high-impact faculty to Georgia State University between 2010-2015, a limited number of competitive University Doctoral Fellowships are available to qualified students working in each 2CI area. Students selected as University Fellows receive competitive stipends, reduced teaching requirement, graduate assistant benefits and a renewable award.
The Dissertation Grant Program & William Suttles Graduate Fellowship are available to support the scholarly dissertation research of doctoral level graduate students at Georgia State University. Applicants to the Dissertation Grant Program may also be nominated for the William M. Suttles Graduate Fellowship by their dissertation director.
Doctoral students with an approved dissertation project are eligible to apply for a monthly stipend of $2000 to support focused effort on dissertation completion. Students must be in their final year and must collaborate with their dissertation advisor to develop an application that presents a realistic and comprehensive plan comprised of measurable monthly goals. Once a semester, advisors will submit a report on the student’s progress and give an explanation of any deviation from the monthly goals.
This award is for doctoral students in any discipline with an approved prospectus who require funding to travel to a museum, archive or library to complete dissertation research. Recipients will be awarded $500 for domestic travel or $1,000 for international travel. Upon return from travel, recipients must present on their travel and research as it relates to their dissertation.
Graduate Assistantships – Each college offers a limited number of graduate teaching, research, and laboratory assistantships. Assistantships provide stipends and tuition waivers for up to 20 hours or service each week. Students with graduate assistantships also participate in the student health insurance program, for which the university and the college provide premium cost offsets each term. Prospective and current students interested in pursuing graduate assistant positions should contact their program director.

There are many foundations, societies and government agencies that offer funding opportunities for graduate students. Below is a list of a few notable external fellowship opportunities. Provides support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.
Open to women scholars of all fields of study, these fellowships are meant to offset a scholar’s living expenses while she completes her dissertation. The fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation.
Awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited U.S. institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low, including Architecture, Computer/ Information Sciences, Engineering, Math/ Statistics, Business Administration, Law and Medicine.
Boren Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
Designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.
