A Guide for New Graduate Students

Welcome to Georgia State University's Graduate School, where we provide exceptional support and guidance to ensure your academic and professional success. Our internationally recognized graduate programs offer a dynamic and enriching environment for over 7,600 students across nine colleges, schools and institutes. As you embark on your graduate journey, establishing a productive relationship with your college and faculty advisor is crucial.

Here’s a roadmap to help you navigate this important aspect of your academic life.

Orientation

Attend the orientation sessions organized by your college or program early in the semester.
Come prepared with questions about your program requirements, research opportunities and academic expectations.

Regular Check-ins

Meet with your graduate director and/or advisor at least twice this semester to outline expectations and set a communication plan for future meetings (frequency of meetings, whether in-person or virtually).
Use these interactions to seek advice on coursework, research projects, upcoming milestones and career planning.
You can also discuss your progression or any challenges you face.

Goal Setting

Work with your college or program to set short-term and long-term academic and professional goals.
Review and adjust these goals periodically to stay on track.

Resources

Inquire about resources available to you, such as writing workshops, professional development seminars and funding opportunities.
Utilize the support services offered by the Graduate School to complement the guidance from your college or program.

Open Communication

Maintain open and honest communication with your college or program. Share your achievements and any difficulties you encounter.
Be proactive in seeking feedback and implementing suggestions to enhance your academic journey.

Networking

Take advantage of networking opportunities provided by your college or program. Attend events, join student organizations and connect with peers, faculty and alumni to build a strong professional network.
